Why Mayfair?
A Co-Op School: Working Together
A preschool where you become part of the community
For more than 60 years, Mayfair Cooperative Preschool has helped young children grow, learn, play, and become more independent in a warm, close-knit environment.
What makes Mayfair different is our cooperative model. Parents aren’t simply dropping their children off at preschool — they are part of the community their children are growing up in. Parents have opportunities to participate in the classroom, get to know their child’s teachers and classmates, and build relationships with other Mayfair families.
Our small preschool community means children get to know the adults and friends around them, while teachers and parents work together to create a welcoming, supportive environment.
Why families choose Mayfair
A small, personal community
Mayfair is intentionally small, giving children the opportunity to build familiar relationships with their teachers, classmates, and other Mayfair families.
Parents are part of the experience
Parents participate in the classroom throughout the year. Being there gives you a genuine glimpse into your child’s preschool world — and lets your child see you as part of this new chapter in their life.
More adults, more individual attention
Because parents participate alongside our teachers, children benefit from additional caring adults in the classroom. This creates more opportunities for conversation, encouragement, help, and connection.
Learning through play
Children learn best when they are actively involved. Our play-based approach gives children opportunities to explore, create, experiment, solve problems, use their imaginations, and develop social and early academic skills.
A community that extends beyond the classroom
Mayfair families connect through school events, playdates, community activities, and shared experiences throughout the year. For many families, the friendships made at Mayfair last well beyond preschool.
A Farmington community tradition
Mayfair has been part of the local community for more than 60 years. Generations of families have experienced Mayfair, and today’s families continue to build on that tradition.
What does “cooperative preschool” mean?
Mayfair is a nonprofit cooperative preschool. Our school is operated with meaningful participation from the families whose children attend.
Parents contribute to the school in a variety of ways, including helping in the classroom and supporting the school community. This shared involvement allows Mayfair to remain a small, personal preschool while giving families a greater connection to their child’s early education.
Co-op participation is not simply about helping the school run. It is an opportunity to experience your child’s preschool environment firsthand, get to know the people who are part of their day, and become part of a community of families.
Is Mayfair right for your family?
Mayfair is a great fit for families looking for a preschool experience that is:
Personal rather than large and impersonal
Play-based and developmentally appropriate
Part-time and focused specifically on the preschool years
Built around relationships and community
A partnership between teachers and families
If that sounds like the kind of beginning you’d like for your child, we’d love to have you learn more about Mayfair.

Early Years — Idealism, Community Spirit, and Hard Work
Mayfair Coop Preschool has been a Farmington area tradition for over 60 years. The Mayfair Cooperative began in July 1955 when a group of eight mothers, concerned over the lack of playmates for their children, met to discuss a nursery school. From these humble beginnings Mayfair was born and grew. By 1959, Mayfair was one of the largest preschools in the greater Detroit area. In 1967, Mayfair moved to its current location in the Orchard United Methodist Church (Mayfair is not church affiliated). In 2015 Mayfair celebrated its 60th year as a Co-op Preschool! The great sense of cooperative spirit and responsibility for our children’s education that began in 1955 continues to thrive at Mayfair.
Today, Mayfair enrolls up to 45 families each year. Over the years, Mayfair has expanded its programs to include not only traditional half day preschool, but also extended day for 4 years olds, as well as Parent and Tot classes for the 2 year old set.
